So 2021 is underway, and January is already gone.  Has your New Year’s resolution followed?  If one of your resolutions was to get organized, I can tell you there is still hope.  And bonus, you may not even have to buy anything new or even leave your house.

From File Folder to Scrap Holder

I came across this quote from Thomas Edison today…”Just because something doesn’t do what you planned it to do doesn’t mean it’s useless.”  I love this.  And it fits perfectly with my plan to shop my home and use what I already have.  It reminds me to look at things in a new way.

This is actually one of the easiest ways I have found to start organizing.  Just look around.  See if there is something you aren’t using that you can re-purpose.  Paper scraps are hard for me to keep organized.  I tried all those fancy holders displayed in my craft magazines.  Sadly nothing worked.  Then one day I was recycling some old file folders and ended up with several empty accordion folders.  A glimmer of hope!  I could use one of these folders (or several, did I mention my scraps are out of control!) to corral my paper scraps.  I sorted by color and guess what?  Those accordion folders worked.  I did not need a fancy system I couldn’t keep up with anyway.

Think Outside the Box, Literally

Just because you bought something for a specific purpose does not mean that is it’s only purpose.  Remember Thomas Edison.  Empty potato chip canisters make great paintbrush holders.  A tacklebox can hold a ton of art supplies.  And I love the box I bought that was supposed to hold nails and screws.  You know what mine holds?  Small stickers, beads, brads, and all kinds of scrapbook embellishments.

The point is, you are creative.  Use that creativity to re-purpose what you already have.
