Five Ways to Take Your Office From Boring to Inspiring

Today I had a Zoom meeting.  And it taught me something I was not expecting (actually it taught me a lot of things about technology, but it taught me something else too!). My home office is boring!  Well, to be fair, not all of it, but there is a lot of white space.  As I sat there waiting for the other meeting attendees, all I saw was a white wall behind me.  That wall was staring at me the whole time, just begging for something.  Byt what?

5 ways to Spruce Up Your Workspace

If your office is less than inspiring, or you are just looking for something to spruce up your workspace, look no further.  Here are five ways to add to your office.  These tips are sure to get your creative juices flowing.

  • Hang your favorite quote

I love quotes!  I have a book of my favorites and I keep it close by.  Framed quotes are a great way to keep you motivated.  This also works really well for Bible verses too.  I have a list of verses to bring calm to an anxious heart taped above my desk.  You can find all kinds of quote wall art in places like Etsy.  But, with a little imagination, you can also easily make your own.  That way it is sure to fit your style.

  • Bring a little of the outdoors in

Sometimes the simple act of opening the window is enough to change my mindset.  The fresh air helps me breathe deep.  I can hear the birds and smell the flowers.  If you can’t open your office window (or if there is no office window), never fear.  I once worked in a basement office with stone walls, not very conducive to hanging things.  But, you can overcome.  Bring in a plant in a colorful pot, use a screen saver of your favorite nature scene, or keep a framed picture from your favorite vacation spot on your desk.

  • Keep a favorite collectible in view

I have several things I collect.  And typically, they don’t go together (have you ever seen a sock monkey hanging out with a gargoyle?).  But they make me happy, so I keep them around.  I have a small sock monkey I keep on my bulletin board.  And there are two gargoyles on either side of my computer screen.  Every time I look at them, I smile.  The other thing that makes me smile…my Hawk Girl figurine.  It make my inner comic book geek happy every single time!

  • Add a splash of color

Ok, so maybe you can’t paint your office walls.  But you can add splashes of color here and there.  Use neon post-it notes.  Bring in a brightly-colored pencil holder.  Change your mouse pad (if you even use a mouse pad anymore) or your calendar pages.  Anything you can do to add colors will help.

  • Crank the tunes

While this may not be part of your office decor, playing music is definitely inspiring.  Even if you can’t play your music out loud, you can certainly use your headphones (just be careful not to sing along to your favorite 80s hair band or bang your head to Bohemian Rhapsody!).  Music will help change your mood and get your excited for the rest of your workday.  I listen to Pandora all the time at work.  Sometimes, I stream my favorite morning radio show from when I lived in Williamsburg.  Not only does that make me happy to start the day, it also brings back memories of my mornings in my office there.

Even little things like the ones I have listed can make your workplace happier, which in turn can inspire you and make you more productive.  So, take some time to look around and see what you can change and what you can bring in to inspire your time at work.
